Blog from Sorrento (day 4)

Today we decided to get a bit of culture and hop on a train to Herculaneum. It was a short walk from the train down hill to the site and easy to get in. We bought the audio guide and it was a good idea because at least you know what you're looking at.  The site is quite well preserved and the insight into life at the time was fascinating.  The average height was quite short 150cm for women and 160cm for men, so we decided hubby would have been a veritable giant at 6ft 4inches tall.  Needless to say he had to duck a lot going through the arches!  We got some good pics but they will have to wait till I get home to post.

The holiday rep had suggested that we call at the villa Oplontis afterwards and I'm glad we did.  It was a small site but beautiful, the swimming pool was massive and I think I could have happily lived in a villa like that. Very unlikely but hey, I can dream!

It was one of those 30 degrees in the shade days so we just headed back to Sorrento for a bit of a siesta after that.  We were baking hot and gasping for a drink, so supermarket first for water then passed a cafe doing iced cappuccino. Boy was that good!  Effectively a coffee slush but milky, maybe more like half melted coffee ice cream.  The straws were about twice the diameter of a normal straw and we got brain freeze after about 30 seconds.  Is there anyone who doesn't get brain freeze drinking one of those.
